Magnesium plays a vital role in many functions in the body including nerves and muscles.
Horses showing signs of magnesium deficiency such as unusual excitability, tension, spooking and anxious behaviour.
Horses that are growing, lactating, or in work can have increased magnesium requirements.
Pasture can be deficient in magnesium. Deficiencies are more likely in spring and during periods of grass growth but can also occur in winter in some places.
Magnesium can benefit some horses suffering from Equine Headshaking Syndrome by increasing the threshold before the nerves fire that cause the headshaking behaviour.
Magnesium and boron together can offer more benefit to headshaking horses according to researchers at the University of California, Davis.
A study that was reported in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, found magnesium in combination with boron had the most benefit, 64% reduction in headshaking compared to the horses fed hay only in the study. (Source ttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jvim.15499 )
